MANDELA'S EX-WIFE WINNIE ATTENDS MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR FORMER PRESIDENT

  • People gather in parks, churches and public spaces to mark the death of the nation's first black president
  • South African leaders have prepared for a week of more formal commemorations in his honour
  • Mr Mandela, also known as Madiba, passed away on Thursday at his home in Houghton
  • Week will culminate in a state funeral, in the small rural village that was Mr Mandela's childhood home
Nelson Mandela's former wife grieved for him in public yesterday at a memorial service for South Africa's first black leader.
Dressed in black, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela attended a Methodist service in the northern Johannesburg suburb of Bryanston, where President Jacob Zuma hailed the values of the country's most beloved statesman.
'He believed in forgiveness and he forgave, even those who kept him in jail for 27 years,' Zuma said in a eulogy. 'He stood for freedom. He fought against those who oppressed others. He wanted everyone to be free.'
The service, which was also attended by Mr Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela, was held as the country started a week of mourning for the inspirational freedom fighter. South Africa is readying itself for the arrival of a flood of world leaders for Mr Mandela's memorial service and funeral.

The Nelson Mandela foundation is also holding a ceremony at its headquarters and in a township outside the city, Cathy Kathrada, a fellow inmate at Robben Island will host a ceremony of remembrance.
Mr Kathrada will speak about his Robben Island inmate, in what is being billed as a celebration of his life.
